OTTUMWA, IOWA -- From earthquakes to Snowmagedon, a recent string of natural disasters have been occurring recently.
The Haiti earthquake struck a month ago, but just a few days ago we saw an earthquake strike some 200 miles away in Illinois.
Snowmagedon caused some roof collapses and when all the snow melts the possibility of floods exists.
Fact Finder wanted to know what is covered by the typical homeowners insurance.
Fact Finder talked with Schwartz Insurance Representative Bill Cox in Ottumwa and he told Fact Finder that most homeowners' insurance cover roof collapses due to the weight of snow an ice.
He told Fact Finder flood and earthquake insurance are optional policies.
He recommends those in flood plains get flood insurance.
Cox tells Fact Finder most insurance policies are something you don’t think about until it's too late.
“Eventually it will happen again. We will have another large earthquake in the central part of the country. If there were any damage to your house from the earthquake unless you have the earthquake coverage, its not going to be covered,” said Cox
Fact Finder found another policy most people don't have is water and sewage backup.
Cox said that some people are questioning insurance in this economy.
“It's one of those things you keep putting money into it and hope you never have to use it. At times like this people are going 'can I really afford this?' You know, can you afford not to have a house or a roof over your head?”
