KANSAS CITY, MO. (AP) -- A state agency says the IRS hasn't paid a small hazardous waste fee that's more than three years overdue, and the matter has been sent to the state attorney general's office.
The Department of Natural Resources says the $172.50 hazardous waste fee is from 2006, and was for an annual "small quantity generator" permit. DNR spokesman Larry Archer says the IRS applied for that permit when it renovated the former main Kansas City post office and had to remove lead paint.
IRS spokesman Michael Devine says the Internal Revenue Service isn't commenting and is referring calls to MC Realty Group, which did not immediately return calls. But Archer says even if the IRS "hired somebody else to do the work, ultimately we're holding them responsible."
The attorney general's office did not return calls seeking comment.
