KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Kirksville Lakes, Parks and Recreation Committee met Tuesday to discuss upcoming events for the committee.

Kirksville Baseball and Softball Association (KBSA) will start signups on February 22nd.

They also announced a science camp that may be offered in July.

The Kirksville Aquatic Center is facing an unexpected problem when it comes to the budget.

“We have had a happy birthday problem, we had planned to spend around $500 for supplies to offer our new birthday party package at the aquatic center and we have booked so many parties that we have already used up all of our funds.  So it's a good problem to have and we're excited that people are coming out and celebrating their birthdays with us and having a great time,” said Recreation Specialist Robin Harden.

Harden says they're bringing in enough money to make up for the lack of funding in the budget.

The aquatic center makes up three percent of the city's total budget and they have lots of plans for that money.

“Most of the improvements are really kind of preventative maintenance type items that we really need to be on top of and take care of at the pool.  The pool is 10 years old now and we want to make sure it lasts a long time,” said Community Services Director Melanie Smith.

Smith says they will also paint the indoor pool which will cost an estimated $20,000.

They plan to do that after the outdoor pool is open so patrons can still come to the aquatic center.

Jaycee Park was also discussed at the meeting. The city is working on fixing drainage issues of the park especially on the ball fields.

They say games have been cancelled in the past due to flooded fields.

The city will also purchase new playground equipment for the park.
