OTTUMWA, IOWA -- If you grow a garden you might want to stock up on seeds soon. 

Wet weather that made a poor growing season last year could result in a shortage of seeds in the spring.  Open-pollinated cucumbers are most scarce with carrots and onions also in short supply. 

Many stores have seeds for your gardens at home but that stock might go quick. Sandy Hudek, O’Hara Hardware supervisor, says a west season can mean limited supplies.

“There could always possibly be a shortage,” Hudek said.  “So you can't really say that they shouldn't worry about it."

Demand from Europe also could factor into a possible shortage in seeds across the heartland.

Retailers say that the earlier you buy seeds the less chance your garden will be empty.  Business for spring gardens doesn't usually pick up until April after the cold weather has finished.
