KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Some Kirksville citizens are in an uproar that their water bills were higher last month.

Our Fact Finder Team learned this may have been the case for several reasons. The flat rate was raised $5 a month for a total cost of $7.50. The increase was proposed at a public hearing in October and approved by the city council in December. The city finance director says no one from the public spoke up about the rate increase.

“The citizens need to be aware that their input is what the council is here for, to hear from the citizens and so they get their direction that way. And the public hearing that was held, I believe there were no citizens in attendance,” said Laura Guy, Director of Finance.

An additional once a year mandated state fee of $2.76 also appeared on last month's bill.

Guy also reminds residents who leave their faucet dripping that it does count as consumption and can add up.
