KIRKSVILLE -- Missouri law makers have been tossing around the idea of making schools districts go to school year-round.
Kirksville R-III superintendent Patrick Williams said that the decision is actually not up to the state, and that the Kirksville district is not planning to make changes anytime soon.
“You know it is a local decision. I don't sense a great deal of enthusiasm about it” said Williams. “Research is very mixed and inconclusive about the benefits of year round schooling.”
Williams said that 45 percent of the students within the Kirksville School District already attend summer school programs. He also stated that school districts that switch to year round schooling because of tight budgets statistically do not show any signs of academic gain.
