OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Iowa railroads are now part of the Federal Recovery Act.

U.S Congressman Dave Loebsack announced today that more than $18 million will help passenger rails across Iowa.  The Burlington Northern-Santa Fe railway in Ottumwa will receive more than $17 million in track construction.

An additional $1 million will go towards a passenger rail study project.

Loebsack says this will improve many aspects of cities with train stations.

"It's going to mean a lot to the economy,” Loebsack said.  “I think a $17 million injection into the economy is really great but it's certainly going to mean jobs for the area hopefully development for downtowns and improving the quality of life for surrounding communities."

Loebsack added that after the construction is complete, travelers will notice a reduced travel time.
