BLOOMFIELD, IOWA -- Davis County High School is hosting a special soup supper to raise funds for Haiti and fight hunger.
Working in collaboration with the empty bowls project, students receive some hands on learning about hunger.
Art students craft the bowls to be used at the dinner while the Family and Consumer Science students make a variety of soups.
The event is scheduled during the basketball game February, 11th.
Student-teacher Anne Craig got the idea from a lesson plan.
“The community members can come and have some soup and take a bowl home with them. The idea is that the bowl will remind them the rest of their life of all the empty bowls in the world,” said Craig.
She said they started the project in December with a quiz over world hunger.
“It shows how little most people actually know about hunger and the light in their eyes when they realize what a big deal hunger is in our area and also in other areas of the world,” Craig said.
The event was planned before the earthquakes, but Craig saw the opportunity to reach out and do something physical besides just donating money.
“For us it was just a natural fit. We wanted to do what we could and it just seemed to be those were the people who are most in need right now and we thought it was important to still do local but also bring that international aspect to the project.”
Craig invites community members to make their own bowls Thursday night from 6-8 in the art room at the high school.
The proceeds will be split between the Red Cross in Haiti and the Lord's Cupboard in Bloomfield.
