MORAVIA, IOWA -- It cost $58 million to build on 850 acres, and now, it's running in the red.
The Honey Creek Resort State Park located on Lake Rathbun went $1 million in the red in its first year. Both public and private funds helped create the resort. According to officials, it could take up to five years before honey creek turns a profit.
“I think we're right along the lines of expectations from the state and from what we had planned,” said Andy Woodrick, resort general manager. “If you look at our operating costs and break them down with competitors or with industry standards, we're well within the range of what other resorts operate at.”
Local businesses in Centerville are hoping that in the long run the resort can help bring in more money. Dan Mihalovich, owner of Tiki Marine and Auto, is keeping his hopes at bay.
"I didn't have any huge expectations,” Mihalovich said . “I know there are some merchants that have thought that they were going to see a huge boom increase in their business.”
