DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- A new report shows more people are falling behind on paying their Iowa taxes.
The Iowa Department of Revenue says taxpayers didn't pay $313 million in corporate, individual, sales, withholding and other taxes that they owed during the last budget year. That's up 14 percent over the previous year.
Revenue agents collected about half, or $156 million. But that's 10 percent less than they collected in delinquent taxes the year before. Income taxes make up the biggest portion, 45 percent, of the delinquent debt. Most owe $2,500 or less.
A proposal before lawmakers would allow revenue officials to find delinquent taxpayers' bank accounts more quickly and seize the money owed much faster.
