JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- The Missouri Insurance Department says hospitals have faced delays in getting health insurers to pay claims for treatment.
A survey of 69 hospitals found more than $500 million in outstanding claims. More than a quarter had been unpaid for at least 90 days. The Insurance Department in a report released Tuesday recommended changes to a law setting time frames for processing insurance claims.
An insurance industry group said Tuesday that most health claims are processed quickly but mistakes and problems with the information submitted by doctors and hospitals can slow the process. The Missouri Insurance Coalition says changes can be made to improve how insurers and health care providers share information.
