DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- The Iowa Department of Human Services says it is advising the state's Family Investment Program recipients that the double monthly payment they received in error last week will be spread over two months.

Department officials said Monday that more than 13,000 FIP clients received their regular benefits twice last week - once on a regular state check and again on a debit-like card that is replacing the paper check system.

The department says recipients who access both payments will not receive a benefit in February. Families have the option of returning their check if it will assist their budgeting. Those who return checks will then receive the regular February payment on their electronic-access cards.

Letters explaining the error will be sent to all recipients on Tuesday.
