When the temperatures drop it's important to not just keep yourself warm but to keep your pets in mind also.

Fact Finder discovered ways to make sure your furry friends stay safe during the cold days and nights.

If you have an indoor pet, try to limit their time spent outdoors during the winter.  As for pets that live outdoors, often times it's simply too cold to leave them outside.

“The biggest thing I would recommend is staying indoors, but if they are a pet that is going to be housed outside, making sure they're got hay, straw, they've got a wind block,” said Adair County Humane Shelter Manager Missy Decker.

Some other tips Decker recommends are giving your pets fresh water and food often.

Keep exercise limited during the cold weather especially for older or smaller pets.

Fact Finder learned you should wipe your pet’s paws anytime they come indoors to make sure any they're free of salt.  You can also buy pet friendly anti-freeze and ice-melt to keep your pets safe.
