SCHUYLER COUNTY, MO. -- The new sheriff of Schuyler County was sworn in Wednesday afternoon in a Lancaster courtroom.
Schuyler County residents elected Acting Schuyler County Sheriff Carl "Fritz" Gottman as their official new sheriff on Tuesday.
Gottman received 621 votes in the special election, while challenger Josh Dole of Greentop got 476 votes.
The special election was held as a result of the October death of longtime sheriff, Donnie Bruner, who died after suffering a heart attack.
Gottman told KTVO Wednesday one of his first orders of business will be hiring a new, full-time deputy who will replace him.
The new sheriff says he has had a few people express interest in the job.
"I've had some other deputies and a former sheriff call. Most of them are experienced," said Gottman.
We went to the polls in Greentop and Queen City Tuesday to find out which candidate voters prefer.
“I voted for Fritz”, said Herbert Forsyth. “He's been a friend and good for this county for a long, long time."
"I voted for Josh Dole,” said Judi Lewis. “I know it seems funny, an older person voting for a 23, 24-year-old, but I think we need new leadership in the area."
Election results were certified Wednesday.
Following the swearing-in ceremony, Donnie Bruner's widow, Brenda Swedburg, presented Gottman with a special plaque in honor of the late sheriff.
Gottman served as Bruner's chief deputy for years, the entire time Bruner was sheriff of Schuyler County.
