OTTUMWA, IA -- The winter weather made traveling difficult for motorists in the last 24 hours. KTVO spoke with sheriff departments and highway patrols across southeast Iowa to see how safe drivers were.
Appanoose County reported four accidents while Davis County experienced three. Jefferson County reported only one while Wapello and Van Buren counties experienced zero accidents.
Authorities say accidents are low because drivers stayed at home during the storm. The accidents are all believed to be caused by snow covered roads and drivers traveling faster than they should. Counties across Iowa have reported numerous stranded cars or vehicles in ditches. These types of reports are not considered accidents.
The highway patrol will not have an official number on highway accidents until all the information is gathered across the state.
