KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- The temperatures are dropping, and unfortunately, that means most utility bills are on the rise.

But what happens if you’re strapped for cash and you can’t afford your next bill?

AmerenUE says to call them and let them know before you get behind on your bills.

“For someone who has just temporarily fallen behind, I would recommend contacting the utilities early and explaining your situation. Ask what they can do to maybe spread that out for you,” Annette Sweet with Ameren said.

Ameren is giving out one-hundred, $100.00 energy gift certificates in Northeast Missouri. The certificates will go to people who have lost their jobs.

Sweet says low income individuals or families can also contact the Community Action Agency or the Salvation Army for energy assistance.
