KIRKSVILLE, MO -- One Kirksville church helps smokers kick their habit.
The Kirksville Church of Christ has a program called 'Cold Turkey' that offers free events, literature, support, and vouchers for nicotine patches.
Dr. Barry Poyner, one of the pastors of the church, said that it's been a success so far.
"I don't know if you've ever heard of Sojourner Truth. She was an abolitionist some years ago and she also smoked a pipe, and someone asked her 'how do you expect to get to heaven with smoker's breath?' She paused, reflected and said, "Well I expect when I get to heaven I'll leave my breath behind." And so we've kind of approached it from that angle, that we all have problems, we all have struggles and smoking is one of those for some of us," Poyner said.
Linda Snodgrass of Kirksville agreed that the classes help people quit. "I'd say I got a lot out of the classes. I haven't smoked for two weeks; it'll be three on Thursday."
The last class is this Tuesday, but people can still come and join the group for help quitting, or just to offer support.
