JEFFERSON COUNTY -- Iowa prepares for the busy holiday travel by warning drivers to buckle up. Officials from more than 320 law enforcement agencies are stepping up patrols this weekend.
The Special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP), is trying to keep fatalities low this year. In 2008, eight people died during Thanksgiving Day weekend in Iowa. In order to stay safe, officials say to cut down on distractions.
“You wouldn't believe how many people don't pay attention to their driving,” said Jefferson County Chief Deputy Gregg Morton. “They're on their cell phone, they're distracted. That's where accidents occur. So people just need to be aware of their surroundings. They really need to pay attention to what they're doing.”
According to AAA, more than 38.4 million Americans will hit the roads this holiday weekend.
