Fewer deer taken in opening weekend of firearms season

KIRKSVILLE, MO -- The Missouri Department of Conservation has released the totals from the opening weekend of firearms deer season in the state.

In the northeast region, Macon County came out on top with 1,418 deer harvested. Adair County ranked second in the number of deer taken, 1,229 this year. Sullivan County had the third most deer harvested over opening weekend, with 1,094 deer killed.

Overall over 86,000 deer were harvested in the state of Missouri during the 2009 opening firearms weekend. That's down more than 12,000 from 2008.
