IOWA CITY, IOWA (AP) -- A Butler County District Court judge has ruled that the man accused of shooting a famed high school football coach is mentally competent to stand trial.
Judge Stephen Carroll says Mark D. Becker is competent to stand trial in the shooting death of Aplington-Parkersburg coach Ed Thomas. Carroll says in an order filed Monday that Becker can appreciate the charges against him, understand the proceedings and assist with his defense.
Carroll has ordered a new trial date set.
Becker is being held in the Cerro Gordo County Jail.
