DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Iowa Republican Sen. Charles Grassley says comments he heard at his health care town hall meetings prompted an amendment requiring congressmen to get their health insurance through a proposed federal exchange.

Grassley said Wednesday in Washington he often heard the question whether Congress will be covered by the same laws passed for everyone else to when it comes to health care. He said he thinks he delivered on that promise. The amendment was adopted by unanimous consent in the Senate Finance Committee.

Grassley's amendment would require members of Congress and their staffs to receive coverage from programs participating in an exchange modeled after the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program.

Americans who do not have health insurance would be allowed to participate in the program.
