KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Bikers, walkers, and runners will soon have a new trail to enjoy in Kirksville.  An extended section of the bike trail near Hamilton Street in Kirksville should be complete in the next two or three weeks.  The trail ends at the Adair County Family YMCA right now but will connect to La Harpe when it’s finished.

“This piece of trail was actually part of the asphalt overlay bid that was put out three years ago and due to that bid went out a little bit late so it got cold and then we had so much rain that the contractor just hasn’t had a chance to do this piece they’re as you can see getting it laid right now,” said Community Services Director Melanie Smith.

The trail is also part of the Master Trail Plan in Kirksville.  At this time, it’s the only one under construction.

"We anticipate it will get done within the next 2-3 weeks probably and then we'll be able to get that open.  This is the only trail that we have that is in the works right now.  We applied for some grants for some other trails, a walking trail out at North Park Sports Complex but we won't hear about that until after the first of the year," said Smith.
