RIVERSIDE, IOWA (AP) -- Iowa gambling regulators have extended the deadline for accepting applications for casino licenses.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission on Thursday said it will accept applications until Nov. 9, instead of the original deadline of Oct. 1.

Iowa currently has 17 state-regulated casinos and three American Indian casinos.

Voters in five counties have approved referendums supporting new casinos in Fort Dodge and Ottumwa as well as in Franklin, Lyon and Tama counties.

There also was talk of a second casino in the Des Moines area. At Thursday's meeting in Riverside, the racing commission accepted the decision of the board of directors of Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino to reject the idea.
