CINCINNATI, IOWA -- The investigation into the death of a southeast Iowa man is closed.
Appanoose County Sheriff Gary Anderson told KTVO the January 2008 death of Tyler Opperman,23, of Cincinnati, Iowa has officially been ruled a suicide.
Anderson said that determination comes after a very thorough investigation and review of all the evidence.
Opperman died of a single gunshot to the head at his home in Cincinnati on January 27th of last year.
Investigators weren't sure if Opperman pulled the trigger or if someone else did.
To get to the bottom of it, the sheriff said his office spent thousands of dollars to bring in forensic experts from across the country.
"We wanted to make sure we had clear and convincing closure on the case, and all the agencies involved, we do believe we did have a clear and convincing closing on the case as a suicide,” said Anderson.
Tyler Opperman's wife at the time, Casey Cason Opperman, called 911 on the morning of Tyler's death, reporting that her husband had killed himself.
Investigators were skeptical because Casey Opperman's previous husband, Brad Tuttle of Green City, had also died of a gunshot wound to the head.
His 2006 death in Green City was ruled a suicide.
Casey Opperman has since remarried and moved out of the area.
