KIRKSVILLE, MO --

Tragedy strikes at a U.S Army base where a local soldier has been stationed for the last several months.

Specialist Tara Phillips of Kirksville is currently serving in Afghanistan as a medic. Three days ago Phillips called her mother with news that a bomb was set off at the entrance of the base. Phillips was not hurt, but she was close enough to feel the blast and had to take cover in her bunker.

“There were people there that were killed, so I just think god that she's ok. It's hard, but it's also good to know that she's serving our county and I just want her to be a good witness while she's there,” said Amber Lupton, mother of Tara Phillips.

Phillips relayed the information to her mother that 6 to 8 people were killed and more were wounded.
