KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Tuesday evening a public hearing was held at Twin Pines Adult Care Center in Kirksville.  The public was invited to share their opinion with the board on a property tax levy set by the Adair County Nursing Home District. No members of the public showed up to the meeting so the board voted to keep the tax at 15 cents per 100 dollars.

“The board voted tonight (Tuesday) to maintain the 15 cent levy that they have, it’s been the same since the mid 60s,” said Executive Director Jack Kelly.

The 15 cent tax is the maximum the board can propose apart from a voter approved tax increase.  Kelly said for most residents, they end up paying less than seven dollars a year for the property tax.

Kelly says even the nursing home has had a tough year with the current economy.  “It's been a little tighter, you know, than previously.  We've had more right-offs than we've had in the past.  The economy has been very hard on people.  We're starting to see that in the rural area.”
