NEW LONDON, Iowa (AP) - State environmental officials say chemicals from a crop duster are being blamed for a fish kill near New London in southeast Iowa.
Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say pesticide levels in Flint Creek were high enough to kill fish. The agency began an investigation on July 28 and a count showed more than 540 fish were killed.
The DNR says insecticides and fungicides were applied on soybean fields near the creek. Officials with the agency say it only takes a small amount of some of the chemicals to be toxic to fish.
They say crop dusters need to avoid spraying over creeks and ponds and avoid spraying when winds could cause the chemicals to drift.
The investigation is continuing.
