EAST OF BARING, MO. -- A day of swimming in Knox County ends in tragedy.
Investigators say a teenager drowned late Monday afternoon while trying to swim across North Sever Lake about 3.5 miles east of Baring.
Officials say the victim is Phillip Wilson, 16, from Sikeston, Mo.
Wilson and his girlfriend, Nicole Crownover of Edina, and two other friends were trying to swim across the lake from one shelter to another.
The Missouri State Water Patrol says Wilson got tired and went under the water and never resurfaced.
The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Authorities said Crownover made it to shore, got out of the water and ran around the lake to get her cell phone to call 911.
She then got on an inflatable air mattress and went back to the middle of the lake to try and find Wilson.
At 8:40 p.m., the Water Patrol recovered Wilson's body in 19 feet of water while dragging the lake.
The body was taken to Doss Funeral Home in Edina. A funeral home from Sikeston was expected to pick it up sometime Tuesday.
Numerous agencies and volunteers helped at the scene. They are the Knox County Sheriff's Office, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Missouri State Water Patrol, the Lewis County Dive Team, Edina Police Department, Knox County Ambulance, Air-Evac, Knox County Rescue Squad, Baring First Responders, Edina Fire Department, Les Cardwell, Witherow Construction, Knox County Coroner and several community volunteers.
