KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- You’ve probably seen the commercials promoting the new cash for clunkers program.

The program is sponsored by the federal government.

If you buy a Ford or General Motors vehicle, and trade in a clunker, the government will credit you up to $4,500 off the price of a new car.

The clunker must have been titled in the last 25 years and you must have owned the vehicle for the last year with proof of insurance.

The clunker must also be drivable.

The government’s idea behind the program is to get rid of gas guzzlers, so the amount of money you’ll get depends on your clunker’s miles per gallon. To find out what that is, log onto cars.gov.

“We have a very long list of customers that are waiting for this to happen. They’re excited about getting a new car and we’re excited about it,” Lovegreen Sales Manager Jim Perry said.

Perry says the program starts on Monday.
