OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Ottumwa motorists need to prepare for some delays in travel over the next two weeks.

Crews closed the Market Street Bridge early Monday morning for repairs.

They anticipate it will take about two weeks to fix up the old bridge.

Crews are removing and replacing the asphalt surface to smooth out the roadway of any bumps and holes.

According to City Councilman Bob Meyers, the work isn't a permanent solution to fix the crumbling bridge.

"We know that the deck does need to be replaced but the estimate now is between one and two million dollars, so it's a temporary fix," Meyers said.

Meyers told KTVO that the patch work will make trips over the bridge much easier on vehicles.

City crews warn residents to plan ahead for any extra travel time they might need because of the bridge's closure.
