KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- A change to a Kirksville parking ordinance is designed to make driving safer, but at the same time it takes away a lot of parking spaces.
The new rules mean no parking on either side of Halliburton Street from Jefferson south to Business 63.
The City Council made the decision Monday night after a number of citizen complaints.
"It was sort of an obstacle course, you know. People were parking sometimes on one side, sometimes on both sides, and it was a concern for folks who live in that area and drive through that area on a regular basis. So we took a look at it and decided, 'Yeah, that really is a congested area. It's a collector street, and so we need to keep that clear for traffic to move through there,'" said Melanie Smith, Kirksville Community Services Director.
City staffers reviewed a number of factors before suggesting the elimination of parking along south Halliburton Street.
The ordinance change is now in effect. Smith says the new "No Parking" signs will be put up next week. There are already some “No Parking” signs along Halliburton that have been there for years in certain areas along the street.
