(DES MOINES, Iowa) - Des Moines County bars and restaurants are finally getting the message about the state's smoking ban.

The most recent check of compliance with the ban by the State of Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division showed the county had a 96.4 percent compliance rate.

That is up from 54 percent in mid-May.

During the recent series of compliance check, the Division examined 29 county businesses and found only one was non-compliant.

The non-compliant establishment was the Washington in Burlington. It was cited for having only one small sign that was not very visible.
