DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- State officials say the increase in confirmed swine flu cases in Iowa is not necessarily evidence the illness is spreading.
The Iowa Department of Public Health reported Friday that the number of confirmed cases in Iowa jumped to 36, up from five on Wednesday.
There are 32 confirmed cases in Marshall County and one each in Polk, Story, Hardin and Des Moines counties.
Spokeswoman Polly Carver-Kimm says officials are seeing a transition from probable cases to confirmed cases with no increase in probable cases being reported.
She says the jump in confirmed cases can be attributed to the University Hygienic Laboratory beginning local testing. That speeds results compared to waiting for information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
