JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- A couple of northeast Missouri lawmakers are trying to secure nearly $9.5 million in federal stimulus funds for two Kirksville projects.
State Representative Rebecca McClanahan and Senator Wes Shoemyer are pushing for the one-time money.
Fact Finder has learned that $5.25 million would be for renovations and improvements at Kirksville Area Technical Center and $4.23 million would go to the Kirksville Police Department to provide DNA testing for the state.
The proposal is part of Missouri House Bill 22, which passed overwhelmingly Monday night.
Now it's headed to the Senate where its future is up in the air.
Reporter: "What do you think the chances are of this funding remaining in that bill?” "Boy, that's hard to say. There are several senators who I've visited with that do have a problem with the number of total dollars within Senate Bill 22," said Shoemyer.
Shoemyer told KTVO there are a lot of competing priorities, and he's expecting a lot of discussion on the bill in the Senate.
He said the funding for the Kirksville projects could be left intact, cut altogether or reduced. The bill's future will likely be decided this week.
