REVERE, MO. -- There have been eight structure fires in five months in the small Clark County community of Revere.
Seven of the eight are arson fires.
The latest happened early Thursday morning at the vacant Revere Community Church.
Clark County Sheriff Paul Gaudette told KTVO an accelerant was used to start the back of the church on fire.
Someone driving to work saw the flames and reported the blaze around 5 a.m. Thursday.
The fire did damage to a strip up the back of the church and into the attic. No fire damage was visible inside the church, although a little water was still dripping from the ceiling Friday where firefighters had doused the flames.
The sheriff says three or four families from Revere have told him they're a little scared by the string of arsons.
"The only thing to ease their concern is they do care about life, I'd say. They care about human life. They're targeting empty abandoned buildings. There have been none that had occupants in it," said Gaudette.
The Clark County Sheriff's Department, the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were in Revere Thursday where they asked a lot of question trying to find out who’s responsible for starting all of the fires around town.
"We did about 40 interviews (Thursday). We're all tired, and through those interviews, it eliminated a few (suspects), and we actually gained suspicion of a couple others so we're going to follow up with that," said Gaudette.
The sheriff says they've narrowed it to four to six possible suspects, but no arrests have been made yet.
Revere Community Church has been closed for over a year. There were not enough people or money to keep the doors open.
The church was auctioned off in October 2008.
Chad Winters of Wayland, Missouri bought if for $11,600.
