KIRKSVILLE, MO -- The rain didn't stop local athletes from getting outside for some healthy competition Saturday.
Truman State University hosted the Northeast Missouri Regional Special Olympics Spring Games Saturday afternoon. 175 athletes competed in running, jumping, and throwing events with the help of over 500 volunteers. Coordinators say the Special Olympics are rewarding for everyone involved.
“It allows people with disabilities, the athletes to compete, see their friends and just feel successful, and be successful. They do a great job and they train all year just like any other sports team would. It just gives them an opportunity to do sports,” said Student Director Gretchen Smiles.
The Olympics were put on by the Truman Student Council for Exceptional Children. The top athletes from Saturday’s games will go on to compete at the state level.
