OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Southeast Iowa Girl Scouts are coming together to spruce up their cabin in Ottumwa Park.
“The past few years it has not been in a very useful state. It had been broken into. Somebody tried to set it on fire, and we are hoping to fix all that and actually have girls over here again,” said Girl Scout Service Unit Co-Chair Julie Barwick.
Scout leaders said the cabin was basically a storage facility for several years, but now they want troops to take advantage of it.
The group did everything from planting flowers to cleaning up broken window glass on Saturday.
The project, however, will last much longer than one day.
Barwick told KTVO that the Girl Scouts are working with the city for approval to eventually build on and double the cabin's size.
On Saturday, the scouting group also received a helping hand from several volunteers from Pella, Iowa.
The volunteer group calls themselves A.C.T.S., which stands for "A Call to Serve"
"We have about 200 volunteers in Ottumwa today doing different service projects," said A.C.T.S. Volunteer Yvonne Baldwin.
The A.C.T.S. volunteers are people from several different churches and organizations.
