BURLINGTON, IOWA (AP) -- A former narcotics agent turned county deputy pulled over a speeding Oldsmobile and uncovered an alleged methamphetamine lab.
Des Moines County Sheriff's Office deputy Robert Purdy says he pulled over the speeding car on U.S. Hwy. 34 at about 5:30 a.m. on Saturday. Purdy says he recognized the driver and passenger from prior contact, and says they used to be involved with making methamphetamine.
Purdy says he smelled ethyl ether, used in the production of methamphetamine, coming from the passenger side of the car. Narcotics agents descended on the car and found "a large amount" of methamphetamine in a passenger-side compartment and an active methamphetamine lab in the trunk.
