With the rising cost of heat and electricity, it's no surprise that more Iowans are taking advantage of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LiHEAP. Our Fact Finder Team learned that the deadline to apply for assistance was extended from April 15 all the way to May 29.
Davis County Community Action Agency staff say the deadline was moved back because of the economy and to help people who may have lost their jobs. Other Iowa counties reported to Fact Finder that a record number of people in danger of heat or electricity disconnection have recently called for help.
Eligibility is based on household income, size, and what type of fuel you use. If you're interesting in signing up for l, contact your local community action agency. You’ll need to bring a form of id, your most recent electric or heat bills, and proof of your gross income.
