KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Voters defeated the Kirksville quarter-cent sales tax Tuesday night.
Over 67 percent of residents said no to the tax—1,266 residents voted no while 615 voted yes. The measure would have provided revenues for the Kirksville fire department to raise salaries.
Kirksville Mayor Martha Rowe says that since the sales tax was defeated it's back to the drawing board.
“As you know we've had trouble recruiting police officers and retaining firemen, so we'll just have to see what we can do and how we work with what we have,” she said.
Rowe tells KTVO she's not sure if services will have to be cut in the long run, but that the city is currently operating without that extra money.
