DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Lawmakers finally know how much money Iowa will receive in tax revenue and this week will focus on cutting budgets and beginning the process of closing down this year's legislative session.
Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal says legislative leaders will give budget subcommittees new targets this week, then it's up to them to start cutting. Budget experts issued a forecast last week estimating revenues would be $130 million less than expected this year and $270 million less in the next fiscal year.
Despite the needed cuts, Gronstal says lawmakers remain committed to spending $10 million to expand health care coverage to about 30,000 more children. The Senate has approved the measure and the House will likely do the same soon.
