MOUNT PLEASANT, IOWA -- One Heartland community is preparing their budget in order to spend money to make money this summer.
Mount Pleasant was chosen to be the overnight spot on RAGBRAI this summer.
In 2003, when RAGBRAI stopped through Mount Pleasant, the town’s activities centered around the McMillan Park.
However; this year the city is hosting a majority of the activities in the downtown in order to promote local business sales.
"If you look at it, let's say it brings 15,000 people to town and each one of them spends $10, which they obviously will, that's $150,000 that we wouldn't have had if it wouldn't come through town,” said Kiley Miller, Mount Pleasant Chamber Alliance.
Mount Pleasant has chosen an outer-space theme for this year because of their ties to James Van Allen.
Van Allen, a native of the southeast Iowa town, was one of the country's most respected space scientists.
