KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Senate Bill 40 or Proposition O has been in place in Missouri since 1969. But it's only been in Adair County for four years.
Monday at Kirksville's City Council Study Session, the council had the opportunity to learn more about the bill.
“Most of the counties in Missouri have a Senate Bill 40. Adair County, we passed our levy back in 2005 actually. We've been really in business per see since January of 2006. And it is a tax that is a property tax and the money that is generated for that goes to individuals with developmental disabilities,” said Executive Director Nan Davis.
Senate Bill 40 board members work with other organizations such as Quota and the Sheltered Workshop. They also provide other services to those with disabilities and families of those with disabilities.
The program is expanding its services and relocating.
“We just received a grant $11,000 grant through Missouri Foundation for Health for strategic planning. And basically we will use that for planning for our activities center. We just purchased a building here in the community and part of that building was donated by Ken Read. So we are really excited to be in the new building,” said Davis.
They expect to open the building later this year.
