OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Traffic lights in Ottumwa are literally going green.

Ottumwa city crews are installing energy efficient light bulbs in traffic signals.

The LED bulbs, or light-emitting diodes, were placed in traffic signals at two major highway intersections on Thursday.

By the end of the day, Ottumwa had a total of six intersections with these energy efficient lights.

Crews spent the morning at the intersection of U.S. Highway 63 and Woodland Ave.

“They're a more energy efficient bulb, they're a longer lasting bulb than the regular incandescent type of bulbs we've been using, so we'll see some cost-savings in the long run," said City Public Information Coordinator Tom Rodgers.

During the instillation, motorists encountered flashing red lights at the intersections.
