ELDON, IOWA -- Residents of Eldon, Iowa set aside a special day to commemorate a person who they say has shaped the town.
People of all ages dressed in their commemorative “Gothic House” overalls Saturday in honor of artist, Grant Wood’s birthday.
“His birthday is actually not today, but we’re doing it a week early, just celebrating with some cake and some hot soup for the winter and fresh bread,” said Jessica Strom, Gothic House Administrator.
The gathering wasn’t merely a birthday celebration; it also served as a fundraiser for a storage shed to keep extra supplies from the Visitor’s Center.
“We just realized we don’t have enough storage in our building, especially as we started doing more and more landscaping. We realized we really needed that storage space for tables and chairs as well as shovels and stuff for landscaping,” Strom said.
Saturday’s soup smorgasbord was operated on a free-will donation basis, but Strom told KTVO she is hoping for a few hundred dollars to put towards their storage shed project.
