DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Iowa school districts are struggling to balance their need to train teachers with the time they have available to teach students.
School district officials from across the state say they can't cut into class time without angering parents, but say they need to allot more hours to professional development for their teachers.
Students have 180 days of class, and teacher contracts cover about 190 days of work each year. Studies show professional developments helps teaching, but those results don't necessarily translate into better student test scores.
State lawmakers have set aside about $28 million for teachers' professional development, about one day for every school district.
