KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Local students are sending some overseas troops a taste of home.

Kindergarten through 8th graders at Mary Immaculate Parish School in Kirksville spent part of Tuesday afternoon putting together care packages for the "82nd Airborne" stationed in Afghanistan.

The students collected all of the items just since Monday.

They included all sorts of things, from hot chocolate and raisins to popcorn and pencils.

In all, the youngsters prepared 18 boxes to mail overseas.

The project is part of Catholic Schools Week, and this year's theme is "Service."

The students also learned lessons in generosity, team work and kindness.
