DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Iowa lawmakers are moving quickly on a local-option sales tax that could raise money for flood relief.

Cedar Rapids Sen. Rob Hogg says he hopes to get the measure through the Legislature by next week and to Gov. Chet Culver.

If the plan is approved, it could swiftly go before voters in various counties. If local officials seek a vote, a notice of election would be issued Feb. 3 with an election held March 3. The tax would go on the books April 1 if voters give their OK.

The tax could be established in the 80 Iowa counties that received a presidential disaster declaration.
