MACON, MO -- With the state making cuts here, there, and everywhere, Missouri's sheltered workshops could be in trouble.
Missouri's 93 sheltered workshops give those with limited abilities a place to work everyday. The state is proposing to cut back funds, which are used to pay a portion of the employees' salaries.
Our Fact Finder Team stopped by Macon Diversified Industries to find out if the sheltered workshop is in danger of closing.
“Shutting down is not an option. Closing the doors on these people, and not just for us as employees and staff, but for the community, I don’t it’s an option. Macon County is full of family and friends and neighbors, and these people with limited abilities contribute to that,” said Production Supervisor Dede Smith.
The Macon workshop runs a thrift store and recycle shop. Smith tells Fact Finder they would find a cheaper way to run the organization rather than cut jobs and hours for employees.
