OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Construction crews will soon be working alongside recycling center employees in Ottumwa.
The Department of Natural Resources recently approved a grant for the construction of a new household hazardous waste facility at the Ottumwa/Wapello County Recycling Center.
The grant is worth $117,500.
Folks will be able to dispose of lots of different chemicals of at new facility.
"One thing that makes it easy is some signal words to look for. If it says warning, caution, hazard or poison, or danger, it's probably a household hazardous materials and it's something you should probably dispose of through the regional collection center," said Recycling Center Coordinator Janice Bain.
Some examples include moth balls, over cleaner, drain cleaner, anti-freeze, break cleaner and turpentine.
The facility will sit on the west end of the Recycling Center's property.
Residents of both Davis and Wapello counties will be able to drop off their hazardous waste at the site.
Bain told KTVO they are hoping the building will be ready to open by spring time.
